Over the years I have been very fortunate to be able to move Robert Ortiz Studios to the point where virtually all of the furniture produced is furniture that I have designed.  On occasion I will undertake a “custom job” not of my design.  Accepting the commission depends on a number of factors but some of them include the following:  1. Can I get along with the clients and they with me, i.e. do we share a similar philosophy and design vision?  2. Does the style fit with my strength?  I can appreciated period furniture but in the end my heart lies more with touching and seeing beautiful wood presented in straightforward and unpretentious design and less with applied embellishments and design divorced from function.  3.  I have been known to take on a project because I was up for a challenge or because I wanted to learn a new technique. 

Custom one of a kind pieces have the added challenge of requiring extra time to work out details that will never present themselves in the same way again.  Translating a drawing into a three dimensional useful object that “works” isn’t always as simple as it seems but when it does work the satisfaction of project well done can be well worth the effort.  With that in mind here are a few custom projects that you might find interesting to view.
